According to the American Dental Association (ADA), more than 200,000 oral injuries are prevented each year by wearing a mouthguard. Mouthguards help prevent chipped, broken, and teeth from falling out in sports-related injuries.
The National Youth Sports Foundation for Safety reports dental injuries as the most common type of orofacial injury sustained during sports participation. They stated that an athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain damage to the teeth when not wearing a protective mouthguard. Often times these injuries will result in permanent damage to their oral health.
We primarily recommend mouthguards for children, teens, and adults who play high-contact sports such as:
- Hockey
- Basketball
- Baseball
- Soccer
- Rugby
- Football
- Lacrosse
However, these are not the only sports that can become safer while wearing a mouthguard. Individuals who skateboard, mountain bike, box or martial arts, and weight lift can also benefit from wearing a mouthguard.
